October 30, 2018: Attending Gamehole Con!

Tue, 10/30/2018 - 10:58
Next week, Steve and I are scheduled to visit Madison for Gamehole Con, a convention I've heard so many great things about that I'm excited to see what they have to offer. Steve's running a special event for a few supporters of The Fantasy Trip project (preorders close this week!), while I'm running a couple of demos. Additionally, there will be a preview of the new Car Wars edition, a "what's new" at Steve Jackson Games session, and (for me and Steve) a chance to play in True Dungeon. This is gonna be an awesome trip, and we hope to see you there!

October 29, 2018: Custom Ogre Terrain

Mon, 10/29/2018 - 10:58
[Image] In the Ogre group on Facebook, Jeff Kelland shared photos of his custom terrain for use with the plastic Ogre miniatures that we've produced over the last year. Amazing work, Jeff! Please be sure to continue posting photos as your terrain project comes together. Those factory tiles are especially incredible, and it looks like you're on your way to constructing one Ogre board that everyone will want to borrow when you've finished.

October 27, 2018: Webcomics I'm Reading (Part 2/2)

Sat, 10/27/2018 - 10:57
Skin Horse
There's a secret government agency that wants to help you . . . as long as you're not human, that is! Its name is Skin Horse, and it's X-Files on laughing gas. Penned by Jeff Channing and Shaenon Garrity, drawn by Shaenon, and colored by Pancha Diaz, it's a sequel of sorts to Garrity's earlier strip Narbonic, which is worth a long archive trawl of its own.
Regularly updates six times a week, with special features (often a look into the creators' heads), on Sundays.

Girl Genius
If you haven't seen the repeat-Hugo-winning "gaslight fantasy" by Phil and Kaja Foglio, colored by Cheyenne Wright, you're just not paying enough attention. Go read it now. Beautiful art, intricate story, updated at full-page size three times a week. ObPlug: we are working on a couple of official Girl Genius projects!

Gunnerkrigg Court
Somewhere in England (we think), there exists a school for the talented: magic, psionics, technological, and stranger things. Tom Siddell brings us a beautifully drawn and colored full page, three times a week. We watch the students grow up and come into their powers, and slowly we find out what is going on in the Court, the Forest, and the ether.
If you were of a mind to roleplay in this background, GURPS IOU would be a good starting place.

xkcd
Three times a week, Randall Munroe creates a stick-figure strip about, as he puts it, "romance, sarcasm, math, and language." You should read it. There are some running gags, but each strip stands alone. Don't miss the mouseover text.

So what are you reading? Got recommendations for me? There's a forum thread below.

October 26, 2018: Webcomics I'm Reading (Part 1/2)

Fri, 10/26/2018 - 10:57
All of these comics have kept my attention for a long time, which means they all have deep archives. With the exception of xkcd (which I'll talk about tomorrow), there is no point in jumping into the current strip, any more than you'd start reading a novel in the middle. Give yourself a treat, or a week or two of treats: go back into the archives, start with Strip One, and watch how the story (and the creative talent) develops.
Most of these comics can be backed with Patreon or the like. If a comic brings you a lot of enjoyment, please consider supporting it, either with Patreon or by buying some merch. That way, we all get to keep reading.

Schlock Mercenary
A funny/dramatic space opera about transhumanism and blowing stuff up. I've been a faithful Schlocker almost since it started, and it just keeps getting better, both in art and story. It updates seven days a week, like clockwork. Howard Tayler is author/artist, Sandra Tayler edits, and Travis Walton colors.
As a bonus, Howard frequently posts very cogent film reviews below the comic. He's also created Planet Mercenary, a thoroughly fun RPG set in the Schlock background. I've played it and the experience was great; I wrote about it in an Illuminator last year. And being a fan of Howard's led to my meeting him, which eventually led to his illustrating Munchkin Starfinder, so it was all a big win.

A Girl and Her Fed
It's a little bit into the future, and things are weird. The government created a corps of cyborgs; the chip in their heads lets them master any information system. Nobody expected them to start interfacing with ghosts. And the hyperintelligent-koala project didn't go quite as expected, either.
Two full-page color updates a week from author/artist K.B. Spangler, who has also published a series of novels exploring the background and filling out some of the secondary characters.

Stand Still, Stay Silent
The newest addition to my regular reading. A beautifully painted, post-apocalyptic story with powerful overtones of magic and horror. The forum commenter base is enthusiastic and tries hard to read the author's mind, with very mixed success.
Author/artist Minna Sundberg normally updates SSSS with (at least) a full page, four days a week. Right now, it's between chapters, but it'll be back. And she's working on a game!

Erfworld
A gamer from our world is summoned into a universe of magic – or is he in the middle of a game instead? It's certainly game-like. If only he could figure out the rules . . . and gradually he does, and as he does, he finds exploits. And puns. Many, many puns. Some of which can kill you.
Rob Balder writes Erfworld; Xin Ye pencils it, and Lillian Chen inks and colors. The comic updates most Tuesdays and Fridays. Sometimes it's a full-color page, and sometimes text with an illustration or two, and sometimes it's a page from the protagonist's notebook. It works.

More tomorrow. So . . . what are you reading? Got recommendations for me? There's a forum thread below.

October 24, 2018: The Fantasy Trip Preorders Close Next Week

Wed, 10/24/2018 - 10:56
On November 1, we will close preorders for The Fantasy Trip. At the moment, we expect to announce the game for release to stores in April, at which point the game will be priced at the final MSRP and not the special Kickstarter pricing. Additionally, we have learned from recent experience to scale back our print numbers, which will leave us with fewer copies for sale in distribution than were ordered during the Kickstarter and BackerKit stages of the project.

We are tentatively planning a reprint of the game for late 2019, but we're also designating some of the components in the game as "first printing exclusive." Thanks to the support of Kickstarter backers and preorders, the Legacy Edition box is overloaded with some accessories that will not be included in a second printing of the game.

If you want to guarantee that you get the packed first printing, we recommend preordering today, before we lock down preorders and shift the project into distribution-release planning.

October 23, 2018: Munchkin Musings: October 2018

Tue, 10/23/2018 - 10:56
Andrew, you studHope everyone is having a spooooooky October! Here's our monthly roundup of news from the world of Munchkin.

The biggest and best news is: we have a new website! Our IT team has been working for most of this year to get munchkin.game up and running and ready to show the world, and we're very pleased that the hard work is paying off. For us, the coolest part of the site is that any of us can edit or create pages . . . no more bugging Jimmie for trivial fixes! If you haven't taken a look, head over and kick the tires. When you're done, visit the forums to point out our mistakes or tell us your ideas for making the site even cooler!

Our other big announcement was another expansion for Munchkin Warhammer 40,000: Savagery and Sorcery! This 112-card set adds the rich history of the Space Wolves and Thousand Sons to your Munchkin Warhammer 40,000 game. This expansion complements the first expansion, Faith and Firepower – you can add either or both of them to the base Munchkin Warhammer 40,000 set. Savagery and Sorcery will be out in the summer of 2019.

Right now, we're shipping Munchkin 9 – Jurassic Snark to stores . . . some of you may already have it! Steve loves dinosaurs and all things prehistoric, and that shows in this new 112-card expansion, lovingly drawn by John Kovalic. (Hey, did you know John's running a Kickstarter to fund a new Dork Tower collection? Check it out!) We coupled this with reprints of a lot of Munchkin games and expansions to make sure all the friendly local game stores, including Warehouse 23, have enough stock for the holiday season, so no little munchkins wake up to empty stockings on Christmas morning.

Coming in November, we have the next set of boosters for the Munchkin Collectible Card Game. Grave Danger adds all the undead you could ever hope not to meet! We're also shipping the Munchkin Party Pack, which we've talked about a fair bit already this month. And we're expecting to launch a Kickstarter for Munchkin Steampunk: Girl Genius – keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook for the most timely notifications, or follow us on Kickstarter to get notified immediately when a new campaign goes live.

See you turkeys next month!

October 21, 2018: Crowdfunding Focus: The Tao Of Igor

Sun, 10/21/2018 - 10:55
[Image]Before there was Munchkin . . . before there was Chez Geek . . . there was Dork Tower.

John Kovalic's Dork Tower comic was featured in all the top gaming magazines of the day (where "top" is defined to mean "carries Dork Tower," obviously), starting 20 years ago in 1998. Shortly after its debut, John started compiling those strips into comic-book format . . . and then writing longer stories specifically for the comic . . . and then telling an ongoing story, leading up to an epic conclusion at the gaming convention in Mud Bay, Wisconsin . . . a conclusion we never got, because it turns out that self-publishing a monthly comic book is hard, y'all, and John suddenly found himself very busy with other projects.

John has now taken to Kickstarter to crowdfund the first new Dork Tower collection in a decade, The Tao of Igor – and, in doing so, to resolve all those unanswered questions hanging over Igor and Ken, Carson and Kayleigh, and (most especially) Matt and Gilly. In Mud Bay, no one can hide for very long, and in The Tao of Igor, all secrets will finally be revealed.

All the secrets except for the ones John is saving for the next collection, obviously. He didn't get to be a 20-year veteran of comic writing by being stupid.

October 20, 2018: Ogre Miniatures, Second Edition On The Water!

Sat, 10/20/2018 - 10:55
Great news! The new Ogre Miniatures, Second Edition hardcover rulebook has completed the manufacturing stage and is now at the "take a cruise across the Pacific" part of its journey from our offices to Kickstarter to the factory to the warehouse to your home. And trust us, that journey is longer than you may think! Work on this edition of the Ogre Miniatures rules started over a decade ago when Steve created the initial update that we posted as a PDF.

Next month, once the book reaches our fulfillment partner, we will ship out all of the Kickstarter rewards and then fill Warehouse 23 preorders.

Please remember that we did not solicit the Ogre Miniatures, Second Edition hardcover for distribution sales. The only way to get this book, if you missed the Kickstarter and/or did not already preorder, is from a retailer who ordered copies direct from us or if you place an order at Warehouse 23.

October 19, 2018: Party Pack Production Pieces!

Fri, 10/19/2018 - 10:54
[Image] An important and exciting step in taking a game from "crazy idea" to "crazy idea that is a physical thing people can buy" is the production sample. This is an actual copy of the actual game as it comes out of the actual factory, bundled up and airshipped directly to Austin at some expense, so we can make sure that all the components – cards, rules, box, etc. – match what we were expecting to see. By this time, we've already seen and approved digital proofs and (usually, not always) a tooling sample, which uses the approved digital files to make a small number of copies by hand rather than automatically. If we find major problems in the production sample, that's a "raise the red flag and hit the brakes" moment, because it's our last chance to make fixes before the entire print run is complete.

Here are some photos of the production sample of next month's Munchkin Party Pack, courtesy of Kat Ryder (a.k.a. Gloryhoundd), who came to help us out at our annual retailer-appreciation event and snapped these pictures while she had a slow moment. Thanks, Kat!

October 18, 2018: Wanted – Autoduel Source Code!

Thu, 10/18/2018 - 10:54
This is a long shot, but . . . does anyone out there still have a copy of the source code for the 1985 Autoduel game from Origin Systems?

The folks at Electronic Arts are so awesome that they have reverted rights to that game, but they had no copies of the source. We're hoping that perhaps somebody who coded for Origin Systems or EA still has that source stashed away somewhere. Long shot, but worth asking.

Failing that, this is a request for proposals for a project to decompile the code from existing disks. Is that even doable? Well, yes, everything is doable, but is it likely to be practical?

We'd really like to republish Autoduel in more or less its classic form, updated for modern systems. That does not require the source, but oh, it would be such a good start.

October 17, 2018: Munchkin Warhammer 40,000 Is At Print!

Wed, 10/17/2018 - 10:54
We're pleased to announce that after several internal editorial passes, a pre-mortem meeting, and sending the files to Games Workshop for approval, Munchkin Warhammer 40,000 is at print. (In fact, we sent it off a couple of weeks ago; we've had so much news to share that this is the first chance we've had to mention it.) This is a major accomplishment and I want to thank the whole team here for making this happen. Special thanks are due to Alain Dawson, our liaison with Games Workshop and all our licensors and licensees; Alex Fernandez, who did a whole lot of work in a short period of time to make this game happen; and (of course) John Kovalic, for his translation of the grimdark Warhammer 40,000 art into his Munchkin style. I also want to thank the Games Workshop team for being fantastic partners on this game; I couldn't have gotten it done without your support and advice.

Our printer took our files and turned them into digital proofs, which we reviewed to see if anything got horribly broken in the file transfer. (Nope!) The next step is for them to create handmade tooling samples that get shipped to the Austin office for us to look at and admire. (There will be pictures!) Assuming everything is OK, the factory will send production samples, which are actual games pulled off the production line, for us to review. After we approve those, they run the rest of the print run, put it into cartons and onto a container ship, and it starts working its way over to us, in time for a March 2019 release.

Meanwhile, we're doing exactly the same thing with Faith and Firepower (May 2019) and Sorcery and Savagery (July 2019), staggered by a couple of months for each. We'll let you know as each of these expansions goes to print so you can follow along on your own calendar!

Our (very) short Kickstarter project to create Illuminati Coins is entering its final hours! Tomorrow at about noon in Austin, the project will come to a close, and we'll start manufacturing these new metal coins. At the moment, the Kickstarter backers have pushed the number of coins in the set to 18, making these an incredible deal at less than $1/each (plus shipping). That's a lower cost per coin than they'll be when we release any extra sets on Warehouse 23 next year . . .

October 15, 2018: Munchkin Warhammer 40,000 Gets Another Expansion!

Mon, 10/15/2018 - 10:52
Savagery and SorceryThe nice thing about licensing a game with as much content and history as Warhammer 40,000 is that there is a whole lot of very cool stuff we want to include in our game. In fact, there's so much cool stuff that we had to make a second expansion to fit more of it in! In July, we'll release Munchkin Warhammer 40,000: Savagery and Sorcery, a 112-card expansion featuring one of the most iconic pairs of antagonists in the entire Warhammer 40,000 universe: Space Wolves and Thousand Sons.

The Space Wolves are an elite Imperial army, using genetic engineering and intense training to build a proud, deadly force. The Thousand Sons are the pride of Tzeentch, using sorcery to impose Chaos on the entire galaxy. Their battles are the stuff of legends and their heroes are revered millennia later. And now, thanks to development work by Andrew Hackard and illustrations by John Kovalic, you'll be able to add these Armies, plus plenty of monsters and Treasures and Curses they inspired, to your Munchkin Warhammer 40,000 game!

You do not need Faith and Firepower to enjoy Savagery and Sorcery, but they work fine together if you add them both. And, really, can you ever have too much Munchkin Warhammer 40,000?

October 14, 2018: Illuminated Site of the Week: Look, Up In The Sky, It's Not A Bird

Sun, 10/14/2018 - 10:52
It's a drone, because you see, Birds Aren't Real. No, they're not figments of your imagination, the things exist – existed – but now, they're actually drones and have been since 2001. Seems the CIA pulled out all the stops to get rid of them and replace them with mechanical doppelgängers that do everything for the government from surveillance to drug trade.

Is it the truth, a cynical worldview, the work of a madman, a gigantic cash grab? (It's a cash grab; the licensed product page attests to that.) If only the CIA were as effective in getting rid of the aphids . . . or have they?

October 12, 2018: TsunamiCon Report

Fri, 10/12/2018 - 10:51
[Image] Thank you to the entire TsunamiCon team for being so generous with their space and time. Last week, at the convention, I ran demos of The Fantasy Trip where players entered the dungeon and fought giant spiders, orcs, an ogre, and far too many skeletons. The demos used pre-painted plastic minis and the Hirst Arts dungeon terrain that we've shared before, and we stuck with the basic Melee rules to give the players a fast-to-play introduction to the game's combat system. The players picked up the game quickly, and the demos gave me a few ideas for more tools that will make teaching it even easier. Time to design some playtest components and give these new ideas a shot!

I also used Norse Foundry "dragon" coins in the demos, with one session seeing the party start snatching the coins; the player character to exit the dungeon with the most coins was the winner. (Little did they know that skeletons spawned in the dungeon as coins were snatched, forcing the party to work together to defeat the skeletons instead of simply grabbing the coins and running away.) If I could have had access to them, our new metal Illuminati Coins would have also worked great in the game.

We also learned a lot about the transport and care of our new demo terrain, so now we'll take that knowledge and improve our demo processes before next month's Gamehole Con events.
