December 11, 2018: Munchkin Warhammer 40,000 First Expansion Is At Print!

9 min 32 sec ago
Faith and FirepowerWe're pleased to announce that the first expansion for Munchkin Warhammer 40,000, Faith and Firepower, has gone to print! It features the Adepta Sororitas (the fierce "Sisters of Battle") and the truly alien T'au, who are sometimes mortal enemies, sometimes loyal allies. We're anticipating a release late next spring.

Kudos to our production team of Sabrina Gonzalez, Alex Fernandez, Gabby Ruenes, and Ben Williams for getting this done and out the door. Special thanks to John Kovalic for his art and consultation (yes consultation – he's a Warhammer 40,000 fan). Also to Shelli Galey for wrangling the art on our side, and Alex Aulisi for dealing with John's business so John could focus on drawing. Further special thanks are due to Alain Dawson, who has been our liaison with Games Workshop during this whole process. And a fond farewell to Miranda Horner, who completed the prepress on Faith and Firepower as one of her last tasks before moving on to new challenges. We'll miss you!

December 10, 2018: Ogre Battlefields Is Destroying Stretch Goals On Kickstarter!

Mon, 12/10/2018 - 11:19
This is incredible, gang! If you're not yet supporting the Ogre Battlefields campaign on Kickstarter, then now's your chance to dive in and help the push to make this the largest Ogre expansion ever!!! The project has been open for less than a week, and already the backers have broken through all of the stretch goals we had planned to carry us through to the end of the campaign. What does that mean? More stretch goals!

We're being careful when it comes to adding stretch goals, though, and selecting only those ideas that will not knowingly delay delivery of the project.

If your game collection includes the Ogre Designer's Edition and/or Ogre Sixth Edition games, then the Ogre Battlefields expansion is a must! More maps!!!! Are you new to Ogre?

"Put aside everything else the man has done – from Car Wars to Illuminati to GURPS – and with Ogre alone Steve Jackson earns a place in the pantheon of game design immortals."

- Erick Wujcik, Hobby Games: The 100 Best (2007)

If you've never before played Ogre, then now is a perfect time to join in and learn what has made this classic wargame a fan-favorite for over four decades. As part of the Ogre Battlefields project on Kickstarter, we have reward levels that include the miniatures rules, a level loaded with the Battle Box (dozens of minis inside), as well as one reward level for those of you who want to take the chipboard counter approach and aren't looking to assemble and paint plastic minis.

Ogre is still one of the fastest-playing wargames out there, and the Ogre Battlefields expansion – combined with either Ogre Sixth Edition or the Ogre Battle Box – makes a great game even better. Join us today, and see why so many gamers are still enjoying Ogre over forty years after it first reached tables.

December 8, 2018: PAX Unplugged!

Sat, 12/08/2018 - 11:19
PAX Unplugged is only two years old, but it has quickly become one of the larger shows that we attend each year. This year, Randy, Jimmie, Julie, Alex, and Annie – a brand new member of the MIB demo team – were on hand to demo the latest in Munchkin technology – Warhammer 40,000, Starfinder, and Steampunk: Girl Genius. We also ooh-ed and aah-ed over the new edition of Illuminati, played a lot of Simon's Cat, Super Kitty Bug Slap, and Blob Lobber, and celebrated the release of the Grave Danger expansion for the Munchkin Collectible Card Game with promos and booster packs.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, played a game, or talked to us about our games. There was much excitement and anticipation for the upcoming release of The Fantasy Trip and the new edition of Car Wars in 2019.  The PAX convention staff are some of the best in the business, and they have made both attendees and exhibitors welcome to their show. And there was no going hungry, with the Reading Terminal Market next door for a huge variety of food and drink vendors. Here's hoping that we will see a bunch of you again next year!

December 6, 2018: Ogre Battlefields Now On Kickstarter

Thu, 12/06/2018 - 11:18
The new Kickstarter campaign is up, right here. The centerpiece of Battlefields is two big maps; they are tried and tested from back in the Dark Ages but have never before been available in this scale. They're green GEV-style, and they come with scenarios. Both of them geomorph with the Ogre Designer's Edition maps. Or, if you have Ogre Sixth Edition, this set will introduce you to the joys of terrain.

At the start of the campaign, the maps will be back-to-back. If we hit the stretch goal, though, they'll be separate pieces – which means they can also geomorph with each other. The maps are each 28.5" x 33" – so side by side, they'll make a map 57" x 33", or 28.5" x 66".

Also included are 70+ counters (sure thing), four buildable Ogres including two Ninjas (sure thing), a complete Ogre rulebook (sure thing), and probably some overlays (the very next stretch goal).

I think the thing that excites me the most about this one is that, assuming the Double Maps stretch goal is reached, I'll be able to combine these maps with the ones from the Designer's Edition and make a single long skinny battlefield, more than 13 feet long! (You have to imagine my hand gesture here. 13 feet – that's well over twice my height. BIG.) That will be perfect for big convention games – say, six players on a side. Sound like fun?

Please go support us – reserve yourselves some big maps and all the stuff that comes with them.

Steve Jackson

NOTE: If you're a fan of the Ogre playmats we've been creating this year, you'll be happy to know that all four playmats are available as add-ons in the project. Four? That's right, gang, we've included the new Ogre Playmat M4 as part of the Ogre Battlefields project. Don't miss out on your chance to expand your battlefield options! –PR

December 5, 2018: Celebrate The Holidays With A Munchkin Party

Wed, 12/05/2018 - 11:18
For many of us, the end of the year is a time to gather friends and family together, reflect on the good times and bad in the year just past, and make plans for the year to come. In that spirit, we would like to suggest that you and your loved ones kill monsters, stab each other, and take each other's stuff.

A Munchkin party can be a fun way to enjoy the holiday season and take a break from shopping and cooking and all that tedious "good will toward men" stuff. All you need are a few devious, bloody-minded friends, a Munchkin game or two, and some appropriate beverages to grease the wheels of deceit and larceny. We also recommend picking up the Munchkin Party Pack, which has 15 party-themed cards for your game and 15 cards you can give away as bribes to get on your guests' good side. (Why do you think they're called "favors"?) And given the season, Yule want to stir in a generous helping of holiday cheer: Warehouse 23 has a carefully curated selection of Munchkin Christmas goodies just for you. If you don't celebrate Christmas, just think of it as a chance to give Santa what he so richly deserves.

Got any good Munchkin holiday memories? Share them on the forums or tag us on social media with #PlayMunchkin so we can enjoy them, too!

December 2, 2018: Fiction I'm Reading

Sun, 12/02/2018 - 11:16
I'm actually not reading as much as I'd like. Working on that. But here's a short list.

• David Weber – I am in the middle of rereading some Honor Harrington. Great space opera! I also recently read, for the first time, his "Oath of Swords" series. Five books so far. The protagonist is a paladin with D&D influences; I bet this was Weber's campaign. I also enjoy the "Safehold" books and will reread the whole huge ginormous stack of them, all together, once the series reaches its conclusion.

• Paolo Bacigalupi – The new master of the bleak, hot future. The Windup Girl is immersive, sad, and beautiful, all at once. More recently, he released The Water Knife, which is so grim that I set it aside at first, but then picked it up again because I had to know what happened. This is a young author to watch; everything he has written has pleased me. You can read some of his short stories at

• Mira Grant – I just finished Feedback, the fourth book in her "Newsflesh" trilogy. Yes, you read that right. Anyway: intrigue and adventure in a classic zombocalypse setting, with lots of wicked wit. Good stuff.

• John Ringo – And we're back to space opera. I have read Live Free or Die over and over again. Just a darn good alien-invasion story, with a hero who (almost) never fights on the front lines, but keeps winning wars anyway through brains, determination, and gazillions of dollars of honestly earned money. Ringo's "Empire of Man" books, written with David Weber, are also great space opera of the ground-pounding variety. I would love to read more about Prince Roger; he's shown himself to be a survivor and a leader, but how will he do as a ruler?

• Peter Watts – In the words of critic James Nicoll: "Whenever I find my will to live becoming too strong, I read Peter Watts." Harsh, but fair. Much hard science fiction holds out hope that technology will solve our problems if we just give it enough rope. Watts' writing assumes that we will simply use that rope to hang ourselves, complete with rattling breaths and frantic, useless kicking. But he tells his dark stories with imagination and style. Much of Watts' work is free to read at his site, Go and look.

December 1, 2018: Podcasts Are Here To Stay

Sat, 12/01/2018 - 14:16
Podcasting has been a "thing" for over a decade now, but for much of that time podcasts were primarily the domain of the geeky and the uberfan. The idea of periodic, often subscription-based content shouldn't have surprised people who grew up with magazines and episodic TV, but even now I talk to people who don't even know what podcasts are, much less how they have become mainstream in many corners. (We at SJ Games even had one for a little while, the FnordCast, and I still hope we're able to relaunch it one of these days.)

A few podcasts have become legitimately famous. The ur-example is Serial, whose first season was a sensation almost as soon as it launched, spawning websites, discussion threads, sequel and companion podcasts, and even mainstream press coverage, bringing to light a case of a potentially innocent man behind bars for almost 20 years. Serial also inspired countless other shows, both original content and stories that started in traditional media and expanded or followed up with more and newer information, such as Dirty John, which is now making the jump to TV on the Bravo network.

Podcasts seem to be the 21st century's venue for advice letters, either spun off from existing columns such as Savage Love (warning: contents NSFW) and sites such as Ask a Manager or original to the podcast medium like My Brother, My Brother, and Me. It's also offering worthy successors to the radio serials of the early 20th century, with ongoing stories such as Limetown, Homecoming, The Thrilling Adventure Hour, and Welcome to Night Vale. All of this barely scratches the surface of what's available; if you're interested in something, there's a very good chance there's a podcast (or a dozen podcasts) talking about it.

But for my money, the surest sign that podcasting has "made it" is that podcast creators and performers are now enjoying the trappings of celebrity, including going on tours and even starting conventions of their own (the first PodCon was earlier this year and it shows signs of becoming at least an annual event). I recently had the delightful pleasure of seeing Helen Zaltzman, creator and voice of The Allusionist, right here in Austin, and she's not the first or tenth podcaster to make a stop here on a tour specifically for their podcasts.

If you're already familiar with podcasts, you doubtless have your own list of favorites – some of my own aren't even mentioned here, but that's because I have several dozen in my podcast queue and listen to podcasts on almost every car trip longer than a couple of minutes. If you aren't familiar with podcasts, there are thousands of them out there . . . why not start exploring and see if there's one you like? And if you have a favorite I didn't mention, let me know in the forums – I'm always interested in trying a new show!

November 29, 2018: An Ancient History Question For The Mass Mind

Origins Award Nominee badgeWe think that we had some Origins nominations in 1984, for best games of 1983 . . . but nobody knows what products were nominated that year. November 27, 2018: Fantasy RPG "Outdoor Encounter Cards"

Tue, 11/27/2018 - 11:14
I recently took time to create a couple of card decks for use with most fantasy roleplaying games, offering up both designs as Kickstarter projects. The two projects closed successfully (in August and September), and over the last month, more than 1,000 card decks were mailed to project supporters. Now, thanks to the encouragement and backing of game masters, I have a new deck of Outdoor Encounter Cards funding on Kickstarter. These systemless cards work with any RPG and are more inspiration tools than they are mechanical implements.

The project comes to a close soon, so please take a look at the Kickstarter page today and consider joining in. Thanks!

November 22, 2018: Bringing Back Classic Games: Return Of The Pocket Box

Thu, 11/22/2018 - 11:13
As part of the highly-successful Kickstarter project for The Fantasy Trip, we've been working with our partners at GPI to design a new plastic Pocket Box. If you've followed Steve Jackson Games since the eighties, you remember the classic Pocket Box games. Car Wars. Illuminati. Ogre. Necromancer. Those are only a few of the titles that Steve Jackson Games released in the black plastic Pocket Box . . . and we're happy to report that we're taking steps to publish reprints/reproductions of those games (and others!).

These will be retro-fueled designs, near-exact reprints of the original games to the point that you'll even get the joy of cutting out the counters! We're producing these for those of you who meet us at conventions and say things along the lines of " . . . and then my mother threw away my collection when I left home after high school." Well, get ready to replace those games that were lost to the trash!

We're not yet ready to reveal the exact launch date, but we can say that we'll be bringing the Pocket Box project to Kickstarter in early 2019. If you're not yet following us on Kickstarter, please click through to the Steve Jackson Games profile and hit the follow button. You won't want to miss out on your chance to help us bring back these hits of the eighties!

(NOTE: The photos show the new, in-progress box. The new Pocket Box is not an exact copy of the original. We've improved the latch, removed the hang tab, and made the box deeper so that it can hold more. Any rumors that I'm happily pushing this project forward so that I can get a copy of Battlesuit should be ignored. Fake news!)
