Big Bang Ricochet - Modern War Machines: M1117 Armored Security Vehicle

Mon, 10/10/2011 - 06:00
M1117 Armored Security VehiclePublisher: Alternate Realities Publications

For decades, the US Army's MPs have gotten the short end of the stick. Given the mission of protecting the rear areas of any military ground operation, they have long been forced to rely on deploying unarmored HMMWVs with only one of the Heavy Squad's weapons mounted on the roof. After land mines destroyed a few Hummers in Kosovo, they got some shiny new M1114 uparmored HMMWVs, but only a few. They got a lot more of them for operating in Iraq, too.

However, Iraq and the widespread use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) got them something better than a HUMVEE. In Iraq, they get to use the M1117 Armored Security Vehicle. The M1117 is a direct descendent of the Cadillac Gage manufactured M706 armored cars used primarily by the United States Air Force for base security in the Vietnam War era. The M1117 is a state of the art light armored vehicle to meet the transportation, protection, and firepower needs of the MP Heavy Squad, a team of three men that must lug around and deploy both an M-2 Browning .50 cal. MG and a Mk. 19 Automatic Grenade Launcher.

With the M1117, both weapons are turret mounted in a fashion that keeps all weapons activity, including reloading, under the protection of the vehicle's armored shell. Additionally, with a top speed of 63 mph, it is designed to move faster than most transport vehicles in convoy, making it an exceptional route scout and convoy patrol vehicle.

The M1117 in the last 6 years has proven to be quite successful. As of 2011, 14 variants exist and while the United States is still the primary user, the vehicle has also been sold to Bulgaria and Colombia, Canada is considering a major purchase of up to 500 vehicles to make it the second largest user and Afghanistan has ordered 440 to make it the third largest user.

Along with detailing all current variants of the vehicle, we also provide a brief on the history from the original Cadillac Gage XM706 armored car to the current Textron vehicle line. We also provide information on the MEXAS applique armor system that is critical the the M1117's success, the weapon turret it chares with the USMC's AAV-7A1, and the various weapon systems it carries.

This product supercedes ATN11007 - Big Bang Ricochet 007: The M1117 Guardian ASV, originally published in 2005. This is a major enhancement over the previous edition, expanded from 10 pages to 44.

Eastern Oljanus - The Sisk Empire: A Torn World Overland Map

Sun, 10/09/2011 - 21:39
A Torn World Overland MapPublisher: Torn World

The Torn World Overland Map Series features high resolution images of the Torn World Atlas; an open fantasy setting for use in any system. This map is Eastern Oljanus - the region known as "The Sisk Empire" - and is explained in detail on our website:

For use in your Torn World gaming session, or equally suited for dungeonmasters looking for overland maps to support alternate systems.

This is the extent of the Sisk Empire on the continent of Oljanus.

Initially a peaceful people occupying the 3 peninsulas to the east and the more western arm touching the mainland, the Sisk were invaded by the enigmatically named "River People" some 700 years ago.

Without a standing army and divided politically, the Sisk people were effortlessly defeated and pushed out of their ancestral home of Viscus Prasidium and across the ancient canal of Semita de Charon.

Here they rallied, and while The River People looted Viscus, Senator Cusco Petratia was appointed as the first Emperor of the Sisk and charged with expelling the enemy, protecting the people, and restoring Viscus Prasidium to Sisk control.

700 years later, the Sisk have taken "defense" to mean "a lethal offense" and control everything seen here; the empires of The River People, Gallia, Bisa and others falling before their legions and war golems (and, of course, their imperial arm even reaches 4,000 miles further north and into the new continents of the New World).

This Overland Map Pack includes:

  • 1 High resolution overland map representing Eastern Oljanus on a 2,000 x 2,000 mile scale in PDF and JPEG format.

To call Maras a country would do it more service than it deserves, for Maras is a collection of city states and warring tribes; an anarchic expanse of broken rocks, mountains, fissures and little beauty, a hostile land torn by war and ancient feuds.

In it's heart there is the undead infested region known as The Blight; and within that "The Valley of The Lich King," where The Fleshless One himself has ruled since time began.

This Overland Map Pack includes:

  • 1 High resolution overland map representing Western Oljanus on a 2,000 x 2,000 mile scale in PDF and JPEG format.

Operation Nearscape: an Osiris File

Sun, 10/09/2011 - 12:41
an Osiris FilePublisher: Sword's Edge Publishing

The DNA of an astronaut and naval aviator declared MIA in 2006 has been found in a fragment from the Tunguska event of 1908. Is the aviator alive? How could his DNA be involved in the explosion of the Tunguska event, 100 years earlier? Osiris is tasked with learning the answers to these questions.

Black projects, super-science, and conspiracies all play a part in Operation Nearscape.

This product is part of the Osiris Files series and is systemless. It is not a complete adventure, but is a "concept module," providing ideas and inspiration built around a central conceit to help the GM build an adventure suited to the GM's campaign.

The Osiris Files: Operation Nearscape was created as the first of a possible series of similar concept modules. If there is interest, the plot arc conceptualized for the Osiris Files will be released through a series of concept modules.

The Osiris Files series
The Osiris Files take place in a world right beside ours. Next door, or perhaps just down the block. People drive cars you would recognize, have jobs you would recognize, and eat food you would recognize. Somewhere, though, there is a shadow world. It might be a world of super spies, super humans, or magic. It might be a world of hidden monsters, ancient threats, or that which man was not meant to know.

The characters inhabit this shadow world. They may pose as accountants, or librarians, or electricians, but they are not. They are not butchers, bakers or candlestick makers. They are something different, something special, and something absolutely dangerous.

The Osiris Files are not adventures, they are concepts. Each operation provides briefing materials, background and ideas. All the material is systemless, and therefore can be used with any role-playing game system. The core of the adventure and its place in the campaign are left to the GM. There are no maps. There is no conclusion. While the concept provides possible conclusions and ideas as to what is happening, there is no set path to solving a problem. The Osiris Files only provide ideas.

How to Spice Up Combat

Sat, 10/08/2011 - 16:49
How to Spice Up CombatPublisher: Avalon Game Company

Combat is an integral part of most role-playing games, and in many of them the most IMPORTANT part.  Lots of RPGs have game systems almost entirely devoted to rules used for adjudicating fights; whether between individuals, vehicles, or massed armies.  Many of these conflict resolution mechanics are complicated, and can take a long time to resolve at the table.  This can lead to lots of downtime, as well as boredom and frustration, for players who aren't immediately involved in the action.

But even in games where combat is a relatively short and/or simple affair, it might still be a terribly dry one.  A bunch of players sitting around a table calling out numbers, die roll results, and damage values-RPG as Bingo game-with no context, flair, or narrative excitement to frame the action; can kill a game faster than a bullet to the head.

While there are certainly players who are fine with this style of game ("Roll your attack."  "I rolled a 16.”  “You hit, roll for damage.”  “An 8.”  “He's wounded, but still standing.  He attacks you.  Roll your defense.”); many more would rather have combat be more interesting and dynamic.  After all, fights (whether in the real world, or a fictional one) should function to get the heart pumping and the adrenaline going, and should be ABOUT SOMETHING other than killing the next roomful of nameless orcs.

With all of that in mind, this Avalon Games How To Book is intended to give gamers a variety of tools, suggestions and examples (many of them illustrated by popular fiction) in order to make their combats more enjoyable and more meaningful; hopefully leading to a better playing experience and more fun for everyone at the table.

Dusk of the Dead

Sat, 10/08/2011 - 16:36
Dusk of the DeadPublisher: Kenzer & Company

"The long hours on the road have left you yearning for a good night’s rest at your favorite way station. Decent food, a clean bed and live entertainment have never sounded so good – especially so with those storm clouds looming on the horizon, mounting winds and periodic raindrops heralding some fouler weather to come. The warm glow of a fire and a hot meal will be welcome, but where is the wait staff?”

Dusk of the Dead is a new HackMaster adventure featuring a variety of challenges designed for four to six 5th to 7th level player characters.

Detailing a haunted location off the beaten path, Dusk of the Dead may be used by itself as a stand-alone one-shot adventure or easily placed anywhere in the wilderness of an ongoing campaign. Located in the wilderness near Frandor’s Keep, just off the Borderland Road, Dusk of the Dead may also be employed as a follow-on for characters completing the Frandor’s Keep mini-campaign and/or as an add-on or segue into the Mines of Chaos series of adventures. The adventure contains a myriad of hooks and ideas for introducing players to the scenario as well as follow-on integration for on-going play with Frandor’s Keep, the local towns of Vew and Sabden, as well as direct connections to the City-State of P’Bapar.

Like all Kenzer and Company products, Dusk of the Dead was designed with you in mind. The PDF is designed both for traditional use on a PC or to print out on your own as well as being optimized for tablet use with internal hyperlinks that allow you to tap on a map and jump right to the description or to follow other internal references direct to the relevant page! We prepare all the details so you can spend less time flipping pages (real or virtually) and more time gaming. Gamemastering has never been so easy or so much fun!

Dusk of the Dead also features maps and illustrations by Knights of the Dinner Table's favorite cartographer Craig Zipse!

Fists of Foolishness

Sat, 10/08/2011 - 01:13
Fists of FoolishnessPublisher: NUELOW Games

Go Ten Rounds with Steve Costigan, Champion of the Forecastle!

Although best remembered for his groundbreaking fantasy fiction and for creating Conan the Barbarian, Robert E. Howard (1906-1936) was far more prolific in the area of humor stories, writing spoofs of mysteries, and humor-drenched westerns and boxing stories. Out of his many creations, he wrote the most about Steve Costigan, a merchant seaman whose pride in his skills as a boxer caused him almost as much trouble as his love of booze, love of pretty women, and loyalty to his ship-mates and his bulldog Mike.

Fists of Foolishness: The Tales of Sea-faring Boxing Champ Steve Costigan is the first of two volumes collecting all the stories featuring the character that were published during Howard's life-time. It's an anthology of ten stories that shows Howard writing in a style very different from the oft-reprinted tales of Conan and Solomon Kane, one where his prose is light-hearted and down-to-earth but no less intense when it comes to the action.

SPECIAL BONUS: Included in this Onebookshelf.com-exclusive edition is a complete roleplaying game, The Violent Worlds of Robert E. Howard. Using the ROLF! Rules System, and designed by veteran game designer Steve Miller and ROLF!-originator L.L. Hundal, this game is intended to capture the fun of a Steve Costigan brawl, but can easily be used to emulate the gore-spattered rampages of Conan.

Ubasti Breeds: A Micro-Sourcebook for Otherverse America

Fri, 10/07/2011 - 18:01
A Micro-Sourcebook for Otherverse AmericaPublisher: Skortched Urf' Studios

The Ubasti

“My mother weaned me in the year 2073. She wasn’t my species, instead she was a lioness, unthinking but strong; her body was merely an incubator for what I was. For a year or more I trained, to scent out explosives, firearms, combustibles and volatiles. Somewhere along the way, others of my kind began speaking.

I could speak a few words, to my handler to describe what I smelled, but I had no reason to think I could do more. However, my handler told me I was free, and asked if I would like to learn to be more like him: to think like a human, to speak as one, to be part of the pack called “Choicer”. I said to him “Yes.” I have ran proudly with the Choicer pack every day since then.”

-Taharqa, thirty-four year old Ubasti combat drill instructor. January, 2107.

The Covenant’s “Combat Ubasti” genetic engineering program began during the late 2050s, at the University of California Berkley. The programs’ first successes created several varieties of drug and bomb sniffing lynx, before Bastian geneticists were able to crack the true Ubasti genome in 2072. The Ubasti were even more successful an engineered species than their designers intended. The Covenant quickly realized the Ubasti were fully sentient and capable of learning at a rate comparable to a human.

Not wanting to repeat the sins of an earlier Covenant, the Ubasti were quickly freed. But when given their freedom, not one single Ubasti left its unit. The great cats’ courage earned the respect, love and trust of the Covenant’s humans, and in turn the Ubasti chose to become part of the dominant homo sapiens ‘pack’. Today, the Ubasti serve the Covenant as ferocious war-beasts, pampered and beloved.

The Ubasti are probably the most unique of the many species that call Otherverse America home: genetically engineered lions bred to hunt Lifer terrorists. This micro-sourcebook delves a little deeper into the species’ origins and culture and details exotic new Ubasti breeds.
