Dungeons Of the Week: The Tower of Terror

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 18:29
The Tower of TerrorPublisher: Art of War Games

The Tower of Azazel is a massive tower built by and for the ancient elven wizard Azazel. The Tower is located at the center of the ruins of the elven city of Trealel Tarn. The city is a monster infested ruin by all accounts but rumors persist of fabulous treasure hidden within the city. Azazel originally built the tower to study the various planes of existence and did so for many years.
At some point portals began manifesting within the city and creatures from across the planes began filling the streets of Trealel Tarn. Demons and dragons wandered the streets and the resident elves attempted to fight back. As powerful as the elves were they were limited in their numbers and the monsters coming through the gates seemed limitless. The city became a maze of traps and artificial constructs designed to defeat the otherworldly invaders.
Finally the elves decided to create a barrier to trap the creatures within the city and prevent the world from being flooded with fould hellspawn. They knew their city was lost and spent their last drops of magical energy in erecting the barrier. Beings can enter the city but they cannot leave by normal means. Perhaps within the Tower itself lies a portal or means of escape.

This pdf introduces players to a STUPIDLY MASSIVE dungeon which is actually 62 levels of progressive difficulty that will take PCs from Level 1 through 15 and beyond. You get a huge map of the undercity, the city proper and 60 levels of the Tower of Azazel. The only escape from the tower and the city is through invisible portals that randomly transport the characters to points within the city or within the tower and on occasion it will transport the character outside the city or even to another plane enitirely.

Each dungeon level is its own seperate pdf with its own wandering monster tables and denizens.

The Willows

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 17:20
The WillowsPublisher: Felbrigg Herriot

FNH Audio presents a full reading of "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood. This story written in 1907 has stood the test of time. It is today, just as creepy and unnerving as it was in its own time. Algernon Blackwood is probably best known for this story and another classic "The Wendigo". Although his writings do not focus on horror, he has in this case created an outstanding work in that genre. It's not blood and gore based horror, but rather a story that works on the mind.

The story follows two friends who are on a simple, relaxing canoe trip down the Danube. Stopping in towns they pass to pick up and food, and pitching a tent wherever they choose to stop for the night.  It's supposed to be a relaxing holiday.Alas for them it does not remain that way.

After the river floods, the pair find themselves riding along on a raging torrent and have to draw up the canoe on an island in mid stream. It's at this point that the author brings his real talents to bear. Through the first person narrative we are not only told the story but an unease sets in. You'll question if the narrator is reliable or perhaps under some other world influence. It's this clever technique that hooks the audience and makes this a story just as good today, as the day it was written.

#1 With a Bullet Point: 5 Handy Haversacks

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 16:53
#1 With a Bullet Point: 5 Handy HaversacksPublisher: Super Genius Games

Sometimes rules supplements read like the world-setting bible of frustrated novelists. While solid world- building is a useful skill, you don’t always need four paragraphs of flavor text to tell you swords are cool, magic is power, shadows are scary, and orcs are savage. Sometimes a GM doesn’t have time to slog through a page of history for every magic weapon. Sometimes all that’s needed are a few cool ideas, with just enough information to use them in a game. Sometimes, all you need are bullet points.

#1 With A Bullet Point is a line of very short, cheap PDFs each of which gives the bare bones of a set of related options. It may be five spells, six feats, eight magic weapon special abilities, or any other short set of related rules we can cram into about a page. Short and simple, these PDFs are for GMs and players who know how to integrate new ideas into their campaigns without any hand-holding, and just need fresh ideas and the rules to support them. No in-character fiction setting the game world. No charts and tables. No sidebars of explanations and optional rules. Just one sentence of explanation for the High Concept of the PDF, then bullet points.

The High Concept: Additional abilities that can be added to the classic handy haversack magic item (with the cost, weight, abilities and requirements added to the normal information for a handy haversack).

The additional abilities included are:

  • Handy Holster: Your handy haversack includes a weapon belt.
  • Hasty Haversack: You may remove an item from the hasty haversack as a swift action.
  • Haversack of Holding: Your handy haversack's main compartment holds as much as a bag of holding.
  • Horrific Haversack: A horrific haversack is larger and heavier than a typical haversack, because it’s main compartment is actually a small wooden chest.
  • Homogenous Haversacks: Homogenous haversacks are a set of handy haversacks that share a common set of extradimensional spaces.

Dungeons Of the Week: Lawbreach City

Wed, 09/26/2012 - 19:46
Lawbreach CityPublisher: Art of War Games

Lawbreach City is a massive prison but it was not always such. Once it was a great dwarven sronghold. It filled the entire mountain of Overlook. The local bugbears and later the invading humans of Asan thought the mountain had been just a mine. The dwarves spread that rumor to protect the bones of the dead dwarves within the mountain.
The mountain has been overrun with foul creatures and has been sealed and guarded since Asan took the throne four hundred years ago. Guards are posted at the single entrance to the rest of the world. The gate is made from solid iron and barred with five heavy iron bars across the door.
Traditionally, in the Kingdom of Asan condemned criminals are remanded to Lawbreach City for the rest of thier lives. Traitors, murderers, rapists and rebels are forced through the Iron Gate, never to return.

This pdf introduces players to a MASSIVE dungeon which is actually 11 dungeons of progressive difficulty from Level 1 through 15 and escape...if they survive. An entire campaign within a single mountain.

Each dungeon level is its own seperate pdf with its own wandering monster tables and denizens.

Upgrade Wars print and play (Beta)

Wed, 09/26/2012 - 16:34
Upgrade Wars print and play (Beta)Publisher: Troll in the Corner

This is a BETA copy of the rules – they are not complete nor have they been fully edited.  Diagrams and graphics subject to change at a moment’s notice, my whim or via better design suggestions. Theme not fully implement. Use at your own risk. May cause printer fatigue, eye strain and non-deviated septum syndrome.

I'm trying something a little different here. In order to get more play testers involved, I'm giving away free copies of the beta game as a print and play product. It comes with a question form I'd love for you to fill out, but you're under absolutely no obligation to do so.

Far in the future, war has been relegated to a spectator sport. As humanity has spread throughout the solar system, advances in material sciences have left us wanting for nothing yet craving new forms of entertainment.

3D printers ranging in size from miniscule to mammoth process material known as Nano-Goo (or just “Goo”) into virtually anything a person could need, from food and clothing to massive, space-faring ships. Using these technologies, a few enterprising individuals capitalized on humanities need for entertainment and have brought back to life the ancient custom of gladiatorial combat. Done safely by remotely operating (teleoperating) vastly powerful machines of war known as War Bots.

Large 3D printing structures are dropped onto remote asteroids and other small, celestial bodies. These come with a small compliment of devices which begin to process the raw materials of these asteroids into Goo, which these massive printers can use to create War Bots. Printers use a series of programs called .War Files, which give them the specifics of War Bots which they can then use Goo to print.

Governed by a strict set of rules, and limited by the programs made available to them, contestants manufacture and then fight with these giant machines, for the delight of audiences throughout the Solar System.

War Bots are printed out of Goo, which is programmed to take a specific form with specific functions. Because they are made of self organizing nanomaterials, War Bots can be modified by simple programs called .UPGrade Files – or upgrades. These upgrades can be applied to War Bots while they are in the field.

Upgrade Wars is a deck building, tactical combat game. Players begin the game with a starter deck of 10 resources and two War Bots (the giant robots that do the actual fighting).

Through the course of the game, they may purchase new programs to deploy as War Bots or to Upgrade existing War Bots that have already been deployed.

The battle field is divided into three zones for each player - the Printer zone (where the magic happens), the Defensive Ring and the Front Line - a zone shared by all players.

Your bots traverse the battlefield under your command in an attempt to reach other player's printers and destroy them.

Complete Victory: The last player with a Printer still capable of creating War Bots wins the game!

Tactical Victory: Each enemy War Bot you destroy is worth 1 Victory Point. Each enemy Printer is worth 5 Victory Points. Once three card piles are depleted, the player with the most Victory Points wins!

Featuring strategic and tactical play - players must decide where and when to spend their resources, which can go to either purchasing new program files or deploying War Bots into the field of battle. At the same time, you must manage your existing War Bots to defend your Printer and attack the enemy.

The Observatory

The ObservatoryPublisher: DramaScape

The Observatory

DramaScape Fantasy Volume 07

This Product is a full color set of three 24 x 30 inch, floorplans of an Observatory.

It comes with Square, Hex and No Ovelays and includes the VTT files for online use.

Game Masters need quality maps for their miniatures. DramaScape™ is committed to bringing Game Masters the maps they need.

The Observatory includes a mystic's observatory tower with first and second floor and a roof with a telescope. The entrance to the tower is the front door in the southeast on the first floor. The first floor has an intricate pattern of runes in concentric circles around the center armillary sphere with its lower half visible.

The second floor has a pattern of wooden planks arranged in a hexagonal manner around the center armillary sphere with its upper half visible.

The roof has a telescope that can be moved up and down and left and right by two different gear systems.

One adventure with The Astrologer could be the Player Characters find a treasure map that leads to an old tower on an adventure or perhaps sold to them in a local village. The treasure map indicates that the treasure is on the first floor, but that the telescope must be properly aligned first, and then the armillary sphere activated.

The first step is getting to the roof and aligning the telescope. The runes on the roof can be used for the first puzzle. Many of them are shaped like arrows, and if the Player Characters turn the gears toward them and in the proper way up or down, the puzzle might be solved. For example, the treasure map could indicate that the bow and arrow like rune in the southwest is the key rune. So the telescope needs to be pointed to the northeast with an angle up of approximated 30 degrees.

If the Player Characters think to look, they can note that the telescope is facing a certain celestial body such as Mars when they are finished aligning it. The second step is activating the armillary sphere, which is a puzzle on the first floor. For example, the Player Characters need to move all the furniture out of the second outermost ring to the wall, and then must stand on the circles from where they had moved the furniture.

Once they accomplish these two tasks, the armillary sphere whirls to life and moves faster and faster until suddenly a portal appears. From the portal could step out a demon, devil, trans-dimensional horror, alien, or any other being the Game Master would like. The creature may offer them treasure to fool them into letting their guard down, but had no intention of giving them anything.

The creature needs to kill the Player Characters. Only their blood smeared on the pattern of the twelve red runes on the floor can break the seal that has kept it in this place for millennia. Once the creature is defeated, the armillary sphere stops spinning and shatters revealing stairs underneath it that lead to a lower level. This lower level could be filled with traps and more puzzles but at the end is the treasure.
