The Menehune are small, nocturnal craftspeople with mystical abilities that help them to build and utilize massive structures that are wildly disproportionate to their size. They are native to forests and coasts, and the Menehune culture is known for operating a massive intercontinental trade apparatus that allows them access to nations and knowledge from across the known worlds. Based on Hawai’ian mythology, this is a flavorful dwarven race.

Where to Start with the Fantasy Fiction of Poul Anderson

Where to Start with the Fantasy Fiction of Poul Anderson

by Bill Ward

Poul Anderson (1926-2001) is one of those authors whose prolific output – over one hundred novels and at least as many short stories – is as impressive as it is potentially intimidating. A great many of our contemporary authors tend to stick with one kind of story or book for branding purposes, often adopting new pseudonyms if they dare deviate from the brand, but this was most definitely not the case for the old school genre giants of the mid-twentieth century. For this group, science fiction and fantasy were all under one very big umbrella, specialist short fiction markets were still a viable way to achieve name recognition with readers, and audiences generally seemed to understand that writers weren’t locked into writing one sort of thing.

And Anderson most definitely did not limit himself to any one sort of thing. From hard science fiction to space opera, Norse-inflected historical fantasy to straight sword-and-sorcery, time travel, alternate history, mystery, and genre-crunching combinations perhaps best labeled as ‘all of the above,’ Anderson was a writer of many interests, and for many markets. After a lifetime spent creating his numerous series and standalone novels, Anderson was justly crowned one of science fiction’s Grand Masters, winning just about every other genre award to boot. None of this, though, makes his body of work any easier to approach from the outside.

Though Anderson was primarily a writer of science fiction, he had a lifelong and abiding passion for history and myth, particularly the Norse sagas of his own Scandinavian heritage. Medieval and Dark Age history was a topic near-and-dear to his heart – he was one of the founders of the Society for Creative Anachronism after all – and even many of his science fiction works dealt with time travel as a way to merge all his passions into one savory genre stew.

So where to start? It is no stretch to suggest that every fan of fantasy and sword-and-sorcery should read The Broken Sword (1954), a seminal work of fantasy fiction released the same year as The Fellowship of the Ring. Drawing heavily on Norse and Celtic mythology – a statement that applies to practically all of Anderson’s fantasy works – The Broken Sword is a pocket epic, a short sword-and-sorcery novel that blends high and even mythic fantasy tropes

One phenomenon that makes for a fascinating study, but lacks a magical counterpart in any games we are familiar with, is computer malware. This publication explores the

Designing Underworlds

Sometimes what you really need is time. Time is too precious to waste on Writer’s Block. Designing Underworlds is a wealth of good ideas to revive stale play. You can’t go wrong buying obstacles, turmoil and magic relic lists for a few bucks.

Here’s a catalog of GM ideas, from which to piece together your next masterpiece. This booklet is paint, pigment, brushes, which you turn it into your creative canvas. Yet colorful sales pitches have never sold a game.

Why struggle to come up with something new?

Designing Underworlds provides a system for running fantasy dungeon crawls On the fly, solo if you wish, with an active GM moderating the group or without a Referee. Let a deck of Tarot Cards do all the work.

Yet far from mere randomizer, this booklet creates the problems of the underworld and mechanics to resolve the solutions. You move from surface through levels to a climax, and all of it can happen in real-time. The company may travel along, flip after flip, hunting for the point where one or all missions might converge and resolve.

A companion book for the game In the Company of Delvers, still any GM will easily adapt what’s here to your other favorite role-play game. Besides, you may find fantasy delving more interesting than exploring a few rooms for nickel treasure.

Some tables are expanded further into full lists or generators, and others work just fine on their own.
The subjects range from names from faraway lands, to what you might call your coins, to weapon names and more. There may be a common theme for the volume, then again, there might not be. They have been brought together into a handy and eclectic collection, a mixture of Fantasy, Sci-Fi and other genres. All you need to use them is a d20.

Circle of Currents – Druid Subclass

Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

The druids of the Circle of the Currents are keenly aware of the natural cycles that fill the world. By tapping into the power that comes from the cycles of the currents, especially in the oceans and the winds, they are able to dance across the battlefield with ease by wielding massively powerful movement-based abilities. This subclass features a new resource, Cycle Points, which is similar to the ki points of a monk and the maneuvers of a battle master.

The World of The Wheel of Time

Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills”

On January 15th, 1990 Robert Jordan published the fist The Wheel of Time book, They Eye of the World.  The series spans 15 books, each a large novel themselves spanning an average of 1,000 pages per book.  In 2007 Robert Jordan passed away and left extensive notes for another author, Brandon Sanderson, to finish the series with 3 final books.

As a huge fan of the series, I have taken features and plot points from The Wheel of Time and added them into my regular D&D Campaign.  Now, I have taken it one step further and written this document so the small fandom that also enjoys D&D and this book series may merge the two together as I have.

This document explains and details base concepts of the series’ universe, such as The Great Wheel, The Pattern, magic and how it differs from D&D and more, and merges them with the current D&D cosmology and world for (hopefully) easy and seamless integration.

The core idea of this document is to trip up the ever prevalent ‘know it all’ players, and bring a fresh take of a D&D universe to the experienced party of players.  With this, no player will be able to guess your next step in the cosmology and adventure, as time, fate, and magic itself doesn’t work in the way they are used to.

Another writing goal of mine with this document is to bring more awareness to this great series of books.  As it was written so long ago, its notoriety is dying out.  The lack of any media attention, like a move, tv series (apparently in production but no information has been announced) or other notoriety hasn’t helped.  I highly recommend these books to and D&D fan, as they read like a great D&D adventure with a large cast of memorable characters and easy to read writing style.

Purchase of this document includes a normal DM’s guild style PDF, and a printer friendly version.

There are no spoilers to the plot of the books in this document.  And certain changes have been made to make complex elements easier to use and digest for DM’s and players.  I very much appreciate any reviews or notes to be added to this document.  Thank you!
