The Distorter – a supplemental character class

The Distorter - a supplemental character classPublisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

The distorter is a supplemental class for D&D 5e. This product contains the main class, as well as four subclasses and 18 spells created specifically for this class.

The distorter is an Intelligence based, arcane halfcaster. Distorters are to wizards and sorcerers, what rangers are to druids, or paladins to clerics.

Distorters manipulate all forms of magic, but have no magical power of their own. For example, they can counter spells, increase the area of magical effects, and stun creatures under the effect of magic. To do that, they use the class’s most significant ability: Distort. In exchange for Distortion Points, which recharge during short rests, they change magical effects and draw power from them, creating temporary spell slots. Temporary spell slots are used to cast spells like normal spell slots, however, they fade after 1 hour.

*Attention: This class is more complex than most official classes, in regards to its specific rulings for abilities. Keep in mind, that without sufficient preparation, characters with levels in this class could slow down the game considerably.

*Attention: This class uses and refers to contents from Xanathar’s guide to everything, namely spells.

All kinds of suggestions for improvement of this class are very welcome!

Please feel free to leave a review.

Happy gaming to all of you!

Appendix N Archeology: The Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series

Appendix N Archeology: The Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series

by Michael Curtis

More than a decade before Gary Gygax assembled his list of influential fantasy authors and titles—the famed “Appendix N” which appeared in the Dungeon Masters Guide published in 1979—another author was hard at work compiling a list of fantasy stories to introduce to the reading public. Both catalogs would include some of the same authors on their rolls, and it is safe to say that without the first list, Gary Gygax may never have discovered some of the names that helped influence fantasy role-playing. In the spirit of Goodman Games’ ongoing efforts to return to the roots of the hobby, we now go one step further to explore the fertile landscape from which those roots drew nourishment.

This earlier catalog was the Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series. Edited by Lin Carter, an esteemed author of science fiction and fantasy in his own right, this literary series was comprised of more than sixty titles released between 1969 and 1974 by Ballantine Books. It brought to light both new authors and revived older works from the dustbin of history, exposing fantasy fiction to new audiences in both the United States and abroad. But before examining the works comprising the Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series, a little background history must be explored.

In the mid-1960s, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings appeared in paperback form in the United States, thanks to the somewhat dubious business practices of Ace Books. Tolkien had long resisted seeing his masterpiece printed in softcover, feeling it cheapened its literary importance. However, a loophole in US copyright law ostensibly meant the book was in the public domain in America and Ace Books produced an unauthorized paperback run of the trilogy. Tolkien was obviously upset and appealed to the fans of the story, whose efforts eventually forced Ace Books to cease publication of the books. However, the demand for Tolkien’s work in paperback was clearly there and he acquiesced to the desires of the marketplace, authorizing Ballantine Books to publish The Lord of the Rings in the US.

This introduction of an inexpensive paperback version revealed a hitherto untapped market for fantasy fiction and Ballantine Books immediately sought to cater to that market. Having already dipped their toes into the science fiction market by publishing such authors as Jack Vance, Arthur C. Clarke,

The Rise of Quick-Clank McCrank (Wranglers of Westhallow)

The Rise of Quick-Clank McCrank (Wranglers of Westhallow)Publisher: P.B. Publishing

The Rise of Quick-Clank McCrank

Product Type: Adventure/Scenario
System: D&D 5e (OGL)
Level range: for levels 3, 4, or 5.
Author(s): Alex Clippinger & Phil Beckwith

The Rise of Quick-Clank McCrank is a Wild West-themed fantasy adventure set within the town of Westhallow, a small far-flung farmstead settlement on the edge of civilization. You should be able to drop this adventure into any campaign setting, published or otherwise. This adventure contains a balanced mix of the three pillars of RPG play: Social Interaction, Exploration, and Combat. The aim for this first adventure is to allow the players to explore and discover Westhallow, and act as the introductory adventure for a yee-hawin’, knee-slappin’, Wild West setting.

The Plot:

Bellis Rustgear is a rock gnome inventor who lives with her twin sons in the town of Westhallow, a quiet and remote assemblage of farmsteads and businesses barely populous enough to be called a village. The creative gnome has invented a series of weapons she calls ‘leadspitter pistols,’ an invention she believes will one day take the world by storm. To help showcase her creation to ‘taller folks,’ she created a clockwork humanoid with a quirky personality.

One night the clockwork invention malfunctioned, taking its fictitious personality to the extreme. Naming itself Quick-Clank McCrank, the construct stole Bellis’s leadspitters and gear. Creating new clockwork humanoids that share its bizarre mannerisms and armed with Bellis’s weapons, Quick-Clank has taken control of Westhallow and forced the residents to roleplay its vision of a strange society where people use words like ‘howdy’ and ‘yeehaw.’

Now Quick-Clank is ready to inflict some new and dangerous oddity onto the good people of Westhallow; an event that will take its rootin’-tootin’ vision to the extreme!

Things to expect:

  • Clock-work Cowboys
  • Pistol Stand-offs
  • Gun-slinging
  • Hoedowns
  • Rodeos
  • Yee-Haw’s
  • Tons of fun
  • Lots of laughs
  • A color changing wagon?! (No need to paint it, right?)

The Series:

Wranglers of Westhallow is a lightly humored Wild West-themed adventure series designed for the 5th Edition (OGL) rule-set. It is jam packed full of pop culture references, parody, thematic and often hilarious situations, and super interesting and colorful characters that will stick with you for life.

The Rise of Quick-Clank McCrank is designed to be an introductory adventure, by which follow-up adventures are intended to be run as direct sequels. These additional adventures are playable in any order. The Rise of

December 30, 2019: One More Week! Car Wars Sixth Edition Kickstarter Closes Soon

We’re down to the final week of the Car Wars Sixth Edition campaign on Kickstarter, with the project closing one week from today (comes to an end on Monday, January 6th.) So far, project supporters have unlocked dozens of stretch goals and made the game’s launch far larger than it would have been without their help funding this newest edition of the classic game of autoduelling.

One of the most common questions we get is: Will I be able to buy the game at my favorite local game store? Our answer: Maybe. We plan to offer the core game to distributors in 2021, so at the very least your local game store will have the opportunity to stock the Car Wars Sixth Edition core game. As to the expansions, though, we currently have no plans to offer these through distribution sales. The expansions will be offered on Warehouse 23 in 2021 (and retailers who order direct from us will have the chance to stock the expansions in their stores; retailers, please contact [email protected] for info on setting up your direct sales account).

What are the benefits of backing the Kickstarter project over waiting to buy the game next year? Here are a few reasons to join the Kickstarter campaign today:

  • A significant savings! The $140 reward level includes over $400 (post-KS price) of Car Wars Sixth Edition content, making this the best deal you’re likely to ever see for this first wave of the game’s launch.

  • Early access. The Kickstarter campaign is estimated to deliver to U.S. backers in November of 2020. We won’t offer the core game for sale to distributors until 2021.

  • Get what you want! The only way to guarantee that you get each of the expansions you’re interested in is to support the project.

  • Regular project updates, where we’ll share photos and information on the game’s progress.

With one week to go, the clock is running out on your chance to take advantage of the special Kickstarter savings on the Car Wars Sixth Edition game. Join the project today!
