Licensee Spotlight: The City of the Steam Sun on Indiegogo

From “Ace” licensee, Steam Sun Games, comes The City of the Steam Sun, a new setting for Savage Worlds Adventure Edition that casts players into the gloomy realm of steampunk Limbo: an explosive mixture of steam technology and ancient magic, where mystical Victorian horror and adventure are played out under the dim rays of a metal steam sun!

Mathematically calculated, the City was to become the new Utopia of the rational age, but the disaster changed everything – the City fell into Limbo, the threshold of Hell. Progress faced ancient magic. The City became a part of Limbo, with no sunlight. The familiar world doesn’t exist anymore. There are other laws and other creatures here – but the scientific method maintains even in the maddest conditions. People lit their steam Sun here. Every morning it rises over the City on a huge rail. The authorities lead diplomatic negotiations with demons, inventors dream of the creation of a conscious automaton, and researchers dig for traces of ancient civilizations. Scientists and frauds, adventurers and magicians, evil geniuses and brilliant detectives… humans and demons. All of them dwell in the City of the Steam Sun.

Visit The City of the Steam Sun Indiegogo page now to find out more about this unique setting and to pledge your support. And be sure to download the 44-page FREE JumpStart available now from DriveThruRPG.

Licensee Spotlight: The Savage League of Seekers

The Savage League of Seekers is a setting for Savage Worlds from “Ace” licensee, Feral Gamers, Inc. (Ghost Ops: An RPG of Covert Operations) that blends Lovecraftian terror with folklore to create an alternate 18th century Europe living under the fear of “the blood curse,” a horrific plague that transforms normal people into monsters.

Events over the last millennium have unlocked the spheres that hold the gates closed to cosmic horrors and dark gods, which in turn has led to cults and secret societies spreading across the known world.

The Savage League of Seekers Roleplaying Game introduces you to a world of dark horror, where players can make characters that carry the blood of the Nodens in their veins giving them powers beyond mortal men, or a secret Muslim sect that has been fighting the evils betwixt the angles since Abdul al Hazred stumbled into the city of Damascus in 740 AD, or even as sires of Vlad Tepes, known as Count Dracul, who holds back the forces of the Ottomans in the East with his army of Vampyrs!

The Savage League of Seekers uses the Savage World Adventures Edition (#SWADE) rule system and features all-new Edges and Hindrances, new skills like Dark Knowledge and Psychology, and new rules for Insanity.

The game also covers Europe via London, Paris, and Germany, crosses the wide ocean to the New World and the American Colonies, and bravely delves into the Dreamlands.

If you’re a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, movies like Brotherhood of the Wolf, or video games like Bloodborne, then check out The Savage League of Seekers, available now from DriveThruRPG. And be sure to follow Feral Gamers, Inc. on Facebook.

ROTD’s “Truth or Consequences” One Page Scenario – Spice It Up!

I second not having Paulsen transform into a Wendi. Makes no sense.

I just wanted to say, rather than just straight up giving your players the Wendigos weaknesses from a notebook on Paulsen’s body, you could just have his notes mention that he knows the beast has “Some kind of weakness that can be used to destroy.” Then, maybe have the bank be the closest nearby building to coax the investigators into it, have the Wendi follow them in, cause some chaos, throw one of them into… a display case full of old silver dollars maybe? Some kind of container with something(s) silver in it. And right as the wendi approaches the downed investigator, have it notice the silver and flee back into the storm. Then, your players can have the feeling that they figured it out for themselves. Might over complicated things though, and it is only a 4 hour one shot so maybe you’re better off going with what Chris recommended. Just my two cents.

ROTD’s “Truth or Consequences” One Page Scenario – Spice It Up!

Given your TPK concerns, I assume “spice it up” also means “make it less lethal”. Here are some random thoughts.

Having the dead agent Paulson also becoming a wendigo seems unnecessary and is contrary to both mythology and common sense. (If everyone killed by a wendigo becomes one, a la vampires, they’d soon overrun us.)

In addition to the library having the folklore, Paulson’s body could have a notebook detailing his methods in tracking and capturing the wendigo.

In addition to the hardware store having the white ash needed to kill the wendigo, the bank is a likely source for the silver. Maybe one of the tellers (or, similarly, any of the cashiers in the other local businesses) is also a coin collector and has been stockpiling silver coins (e.g., older 90% silver dimes) as s/he receives them, or the president has a number of British silver shillings in a paperweight on the desk. Hardware store tools could be used to pound the coins into a crude dagger, or the players could chop them up and load shotgun shells with the pieces (probably a more sensible course).

Silver City was originally a mining camp, so there could be silver memorabilia in other businesses.

The Zuni reservation is on the other side of Gila National Forest from Silver City, and the Zuni are silversmiths, so silver jewelry may be common in town.

I’d provide a map of the town for the players, and maybe separate diagrams for any location with useful items (e.g., library map showing where the mythology section would be; bank map showing tellers’ cages and president’s office; hardware store map with general info on what type of equipment is where, without spelling out “white ash axe handles here”).

Wendigos as such are not a native New Mexican legend. This wendigo may be related to one of the cannibalistic “ogre kachinas” of the Zuni (and Hopi of nearby Arizona). The library (or Paulson’s notebook) would have info about these. Therefore, there may be Hopi/Zuni ways of controlling it.

Surely something about the wendigo’s presence is connected to the blizzard. Maybe it has some sort of Ithaqua medallion around its neck, and breaking the medallion will stop the blizzard, making it easier to avoid the wendigo.

Guns and Bonus Dice

Yeah. It seems like cultists could still dodge, take cover, attack in overwhelming numbers… or use guns themselves.

Also, what’s to stop melee mooks (on their turn, after the PC’s have done all their shooting) from popping around the a corner, closing the distance and melee attacking all in one turn. I mean: melee cultists aren’t even expected to challenge PC’s, but at least the players can then make some dodge rolls to feel Heroic.

The Beast

Chewbacca is recognized around the underworld as Han Solo’s more respectable Wookiee first mate, unflinchingly loyal even though he might be a reluctant partner in Han’s wilder schemes. Chewbacca’s loyalty is well-earned: he believes he owes Han a life debt, driving him to protect Han in return. The two met on Mimban, where Solo helped the

Wookiee escape Imperial imprisonment and joined a criminal gang on an ambitious heist. The two stayed together afterward and became an inseparable team.

Chewbacca is a fierce combatant. He plays up his appearance and reputation as Han Solo’s muscle, while Han relies on the Wookiee’s reputation for strength and violence to intimidate his enemies. Chewbacca also certainly has Rebel sympathies. While Solo ostensibly makes the big decisions for the pair, Chewbacca has considerable influence and often guilts his partner into doing the right thing.

Chewbacca is almost always encountered with Han Solo, though the Wookiee sometimes has missions or tasks of his own in which the PCs might be involved. Chewie is constantly working on the Millennium Falcon and can often be found wherever the ship is berthed while Han takes care of other business.

Chewbacca is a fearsome foe or ally, and thanks to his life debt, he can spend a Destiny Point to reroll a skill check when
